Civil Society welcomes the Political Declaration adopted at UN meeting on 25th Anniversary of International Conference on Population and Development
The Nairobi Summit on ICPD25 will take place on 12-14 November 2019 at the Kenyatta International Centre, Nairobi, Kenya.
CPD52 - draft declaration - update on silence procedure
Civil society organisations attending the UN Commission on Population and Development (CPD) welcome the unanimously agreed historic political declaration at the beginning of its meeting at the United Nations in New York, 1-5 April 2019.
Discussions on revised text for CPD political declaration
In the email below, the Chair has confirmed that the silence has not been broken and that the text of the draft declaration will be adopted on 1 April 1 in the opening session of the CPD:
Next version of Political Declaration for CPD now available
The chair conducted the revised text for the political declaration, (See: Next version of Political Declaration for CPD now available) with the changes to operative paras (OP) 1, 3 and 5, in the second and final day of consultations on 25 March. OP 1 included a change in the verb “provide” to “offr” related to review conferences, which was a concern for the Russian Federation.
Next steps towards CPD52 and the Political Declaration
H E Mr Courtenay Rattray of Jamaica, the Chairperson designate, has circulated a revised draft of the Political Declaration. The next consultations, at which it will be discussed, will be held on Monday 25 March.

Following the informal informal consultations on Wednesday 6 March for the zero draft of the political declaration of the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) for the 52nd session of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD52), H E Mr Courtenay Rattray of Jamaica, the Chairperson designate, will circulate a further ‘tweaked’ draft before the next consultations which are scheduled to take place on Monday 25 March.

UN Commission on Population and Development
The process leading up to the Summit will begin at the forthcoming session of the UN Commission on Population and Development (CPD), which will meet 1-5 April at the United Nations in New York.
2019 marks the 25th anniversary of the ground breaking International Conference on Population and Development, held in Cairo in 1994. During the conference, leaders articulated a bold vision regarding the relationships between population, development and individual well-being. Its Programme of Action, adopted by 179 countries, recognized that reproductive health, as well as women's empowerment and gender equality, are the pathway to sustainable development.
