ICPD 25 years later: Recommitting to the vision of Cairo

Statement made by Marianne Haslegrave, Director Commat, at UNECE Conference on ICPD+25

We would like to share the following reflections and recommendations from the CSO Consultation yesterday to ensure that the vision of Cairo should be fully implemented going forwards:

  • The ICPD Programme of Action and the outcomes of its review conferences should be meaningfully integrated into the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development with appropriate linkages to the Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing implementation, accountability, monitoring and follow-up

  • Governments should accelerate the implementation of sexual and reproductive health and rights and gender equality provisions enshrined in existing policy frameworks by harnessing the demographic dividend towards the achievement of Agenda 2063 in Africa and the 2030 Agenda and reflect this commitment in the future regional reviews

  • The ECE Regional Review outcome should make specific reference to the importance of implementing the ICPD Programme of Action  in order to achieve the 2030 Agenda, and make an explicit link between realizing sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights and achieving sustainable development

  • Governments should ensure that their national reports on their progress towards achieving the ICPD Programme of Action specifically reflect the goals and targets of the 2030 Agenda, and that their plans and voluntary national reviews for achieving the 2030 Agenda specifically integrate the outcomes of the ICPD Programme of Action, with an emphasis on the gaps identified through the ICPD+25 review
